Welcome to the world of Pokémon card collecting! Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting out, there's something truly magical about the excitement of opening a fresh pack of cards and discovering what's inside. With so many different sets, rarities, and types of cards out there, it’s easy for a newcomer to get lost. Use this Pokemon card guide to jumpstart your collection and make all the right moves.

The Most Important Question for Collectors

Before doing anything else, answer this question: ‘Why am I building a collection at all?’

Like most TCGs, Pokemon is an incredibly versatile game, and there’s no single best way to have fun with it.

    • Collecting For Duels: For some, collecting Pokemon cards is all about the thrill of demolishing your opponent in a duel. These players will prioritize deck-building over all else to increase their chances of winning duels.

Collecting cards for dueling is different from collecting for fun because of strategy. Someone collecting for fun will target aesthetically appealing cards or cards that visually fit in with their existing collection. On the other hand, a duelist will have to consider each card's strengths and weaknesses to build synergy with their deck.

    • Collecting To Invest: Many newcomers look up how to start collecting Pokemon cards because they’ve heard stories about the financial benefits somewhere. Pokemon cards as a financial investment really took off during the pandemic, with booster box prices reaching the thousands in some cases. That hype is still going strong today, and the right trade can turn a minor investment into a massive profit.

    • Collecting for a Good Time: This category describes the vast majority of collectors. Pokemon card collecting as a casual hobby has been around for decades now. As far as TCGs go, Pokemon is relatively easier to get into than something like MTG. Additionally, the visually stunning artwork from new lineups like Twilight Masquerade and Temporal Forces is doing a great job of pulling new collectors into the hobby.

Card Collecting 101

Most Pokemon card guides overlook the two most important items every collector should have before opening new Pokemon boxes.

  1. A Budget: TCGs as a hobby can get very expensive very quickly if you aren’t careful. Things like FOMO and the occasional sale will lead to frequent impulse purchases. Once you’ve decided why you’re getting into Pokemon card collecting, choose how much you will spend on that goal. You should at least have a vague plan that outlines your ideal deck, and how to collect those cards.
  2. Protection: A rare shiny Lugia card can quickly become worthless after a single minor accident. Avoid silly mistakes by keeping a couple of reliable card sleeves on the desk as you unbox new cards. We also recommend getting a binder in advance. Binders are relatively inexpensive, and they’re a great way to display your new collection while also keeping it safe.

How To Start Collecting Pokemon Cards

Collectors have two main options when it comes to buying Pokemon cards.

Pokemon Booster Boxes and Packs

Booster packs are most people’s first introduction to the hobby. These packs are cheap, widely available, and usually include ten cards. You can expect at least one rare card in each pack, along with an energy card. If you’re interested in Pokemon’s online TCG offerings, you’ll be happy to know that booster packs also include a redeemable code card for online decks.

Pokemon booster boxes offer better overall value if you’re new to Pokemon card collecting. Each box typically contains 36 booster packs, totaling 360 cards per box. If you can get a good deal on a booster box, there is no better way to build up your deck from scratch.

1-on-1 Trades

If you’ve played the games, you’re no stranger to an old-fashioned Pokemon trade. Collectors searching for a specific card for their deck can head to their local trading card store or social media forums to set up a trade. Most collectors will be more than happy to make a trade as long as you’ve got something of value. If you’re completely new to Pokemon card collecting, you can always sign up for a giveaway at your local TCG store for a chance to win a rare card. We also host many local Pokemon events, so check out our Pokemon Event Calendar to attend!
